History of White Fox
With more settlers coming into the area and the CPR bridge over the Saskatchewan River, the call for a town was obvious. CPR decided that a site seven or eight miles between locations was a good place, that is where White Fox sits today. Harold Guloien owned the land, having purchased it from Fred Lundgren, who had bought the original Arthur Logan homestead. The land was surveyed and work on mapping out the village began. The name "White Fox" was chosen because of the river just north of town, there are some that say there were actually white foxes living close to the river! The Village of White Fox was born in 1929. Jim McGuire, Vaughn Hayes, Jack McBain and William Harvey were the first business owners in town, there was a hardware store, grocery store, livery barn and barbershop.
The village continued to grow in the 1930's with businesses including an elevator, drug store, hotel, cafe, post office, churches, school, hospital, rink, tennis courts and a theatre. To help with community events, a Board of Trade was established. In 1935, the Alfalfa Seed Growers Marketing Assoc. Ltd. was created. The first town council was created in 1941, which enable the village to provide gravel, energy, sidewalks and streetlights. The first members were: Walter Atkinson, Vaughn Hayes and Robert Bradshaw.
In 1947, disaster struck with fire destroying a large number of businesses. A fire truck and siren were purchased shortly after that. In 1950, the Alfalfa Dehydration Plant was opened and population soon grew to 408. In 1960, a new elementary school was built. The town also installed, natural gas, water and sewer that year. In 1984, fire struck again, this time destroying the Alfalfa Seed Plant.
